Challenge and Solution
Significant dense Packet over SONET (POS) deployments exist despite the overwhelming industry trend toward Ethernet. Operators are looking for POS-like operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) functions at Ethernet price points with technologies such as OTN G.709 encapsulation. Some operators have traditional transponder systems that can operate only in OC-768 and OTU-3 modes.

In addition, bandwidth growth is leading all markets, including data center operators, to move to 40 Gigabit Ethernet in the aggregation layer to handle growth in the data center.

The Cisco® CRS-X Carrier Routing System provides outstanding economical scale, IP and optical network convergence, and a proven architecture that's delivered 10 times the capacity over 10 years. The Cisco CRS-X 4-Port 100GE LAN/OTN Interface Module is powered by advanced forwarding application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), a chipset architecture based on multidimensional engineering, and Cisco IOS® XR Software, a unique distributed operating system.

The Cisco CRS Flexible PLIM is a Next Generation PLIM, which provides the flexibility and supports both: Cisco SPA (Shared Port Adapter) as well as integrated 10GE ports built into the PLIM itself. With four SPA bays available in the PLIM, those customers with any existing SPA install base can migrate their SPA infrastructure to CRS. With the CRS Flexible PLIM, the customers can also utilize built-in 6-ports of 10GE. These 6 x 10GE ports support multiple framing options including the new OTN framing on top of the WAN and LAN PHY framing. Also, the 10GE ports will support Tunable DWDM optics, turning the 6-ports into 10GE IPoDWDM interfaces.
