The Cisco UCS® C240 M4 Rack Server is our newest 2-socket, 2-rack-unit (2RU) rack server (Figure 1.) It offers outstanding performance and expandability for a wide range of storage and I/O-intensive infrastructure workloads, from big data to collaboration. The enterprise-class Cisco UCS C240 M4 server extends the capabilities of the Cisco Unified Computing System™ (Cisco UCS) portfolio in a 2RU form factor with the addition of the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v3 product family, which delivers a superb combination of performance, flexibility, and efficiency.

The UCS C240 M4 SFF server is the newest 2-socket, 2U rack server from Cisco, designed for both performance and expandability over a wide range of storage-intensive infrastructure workloads from big data to collaboration.

The enterprise-class UCS C240 M4 SFF server extends the capabilities of Cisco's Unified Computing System portfolio in a 2U form factor with the addition of the Intel® Xeon E5-2600 v3 series processor family that delivers the best combination of performance, flexibility, and efficiency gains. In addition, the UCS C240 M4 SFF server provides 24 DIMM slots, up to 6 PCI Express (PCIe) 3.0 slots, up to 24 front-loading drives plus two (optional) internal SATA boot drives for a total of 26 internal drives.

The C240 M4 server includes a modular LAN on motherboard (mLOM) slot for installation of a Cisco Virtual Interface Card (VIC) or third-party network interface card (NIC) without consuming a PCI slot in addition to 2 x 1 GbE embedded (on the motherboard) LOM ports. These features combine to provide outstanding levels of internal memory and storage expandability along with exceptional performance.

The Cisco UCS C240 M4 server can be used standalone, or as part of the Cisco Unified Computing System, which unifies computing, networking, management, virtualization, and storage access into a single integrated architecture enabling end-to-end server visibility, management, and control in both bare metal and virtualized environments.

UCS C240 M5 SFF server extends the capabilities of Cisco's Unified Computing System portfolio in a 2U form factor with the addition of the Intel® Xeon® Processor Scalable Family, 24 DIMM slots for 2666 MHz DDR4 DIMMs and up to 128GB capacity points, up to 6 PCI Express (PCIe) 3.0 slots, and up to 26 internal SFF drives. The C240 M5 SFF server also includes one dedicated internal slot for a 12G SAS storage controller card.

The C240 M5 server includes a dedicated internal modular LAN on motherboard (mLOM) slot for installation of a Cisco Virtual Interface Card (VIC) or third-party network interface card (NIC), without consuming a PCI slot, in addition to 2 x 10Gbase-T Intel x550 embedded(on the motherboard) LOM ports.

The Cisco UCS C240 M5 server can be used standalone, or as part of the Cisco Unified Computing System, which unifies computing, networking, management, virtualization, and storage access into a single integrated architecture enabling end-to-end server visibility, management, and control in both bare metal and virtualized environments.

The UCS C240 M6 LFF server extends the capabilities of Cisco's Unified Computing System portfolio in a 2U form factor with the addition of the 3rd Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors (Ice Lake), 16 DIMM slots per CPU for 3200-MHz DDR4 DIMMs with per DIMM capacity points up to 256 GB. Up to 8 TB total memory (for 2 CPUs) is available if the memory slots are populated with 32 x 256 GB DDR4 DIMMs1 or 16 x 256 GB DDR4 DIMMs and 16 x 256 GB Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory Modules (PMem).

The server accommodates up to 12 front facing SAS-only LFF drives, up to 4 mid-plane SAS-only LFF drives, and up to 4 rear-facing SFF drives (SAS or SATA or NVMe).

The server is equipped with two rear storage risers (2 drive slots each) and one rear PCIe riser (3 PCIe slots). The server also provides a riser slot for a 12G SAS RAID controller with SuperCap for write cache backup, or for a SAS HBA. The chassis is equipped with six fans and two power supplies.
